Root Canal Therapy for Infected or Damaged Teeth in Dogs

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic treatment, is a procedure that is performed to remove infected or damaged tissue from inside the root of a tooth. This procedure is commonly performed on dogs as well as humans and is typically done to save a tooth that has become infected or damaged from being extracted.

What is The Root Canal Process Like?

The process of root canal therapy in dogs is similar to the process in humans, except veterinary patients must be under general anesthesia. Once the pet is anesthetized, the veterinarian will numb the area around the tooth to minimize any discomfort. Next, they will create an opening in the top of the tooth to access the infected or damaged tissue inside the root.

Using specialized instruments, the veterinarian will remove the infected or damaged tissue from inside the root and clean the inside of the root canal. Once the root canal has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, the veterinarian will fill the root canal with a special material to help prevent further infection and protect the tooth.

Finally, the opening in the top of the tooth will be restored with a strong composite restoration and can even have a metal crown placed over the tooth.
