How To Treat Periodontal Disease in Dogs
Periodontal surgery is typically performed when non-surgical treatment methods, such as scaling and root planing, have been unsuccessful in treating the disease. The specific type of periodontal surgery will depend on the severity of the disease and may include procedures such as gingival flap surgery, bone grafting, root planing, or tooth extraction.
During periodontal surgery, with the patient anesthetized, the veterinarian will numb the area around the affected teeth to minimize any discomfort. They will then make an incision in the gum tissue to access the infected or damaged tissue. The veterinarian will remove the infected or damaged tissue and clean the area to remove any bacteria. Once the area has been thoroughly cleaned, the veterinarian will close the incision with sutures.
